Pre-Surgical Instructions

Pre and Post-Op Instructions

We feel that in order to make your surgery as pleasant as possible, the following suggestions should be followed:

1. It is important that you have a light breakfast or lunch on the day of the surgery.

2. Take all medications you would normally take as directed for other medical reasons, except for any blood thinners as they should have been discontinued prior to surgery.

3. Have your prescriptions filled, take the ones before surgery as directed.

4. If prescribed sedation pills prior to surgery, you must have a ride to and from the appointment. If they have chosen not to stay, we will be happy to notify them when surgery is almost over to return for pick up. It is imperative that you make arrangements for an adult to care for you while the sedative drugs still have an effect after the surgery (usually 2-6 hours).

5. Be sure to wear comfortable, open collared, loose waisted clothing to the surgery.

6. Prepare several cold packs by putting damp washcloths in small ziplock bags ahead of time. These should be put in the freezer for use in the first few hours following surgery.

7. Have available soft foods, such as soups, potatoes, eggs, oatmeal, soft cooked vegetables, baked or broiled fish or chicken, pasta, etc. Also good to have is nutritional drinks like Ensure or Boost. These can be blended with vanilla ice cream to make a nutritional shake. Try to avoid hot or carbonated drinks for the first 2-3 days.

8. Please review the arrangements you have to make for payment of your surgery fee. We asked that all sedated patients have checks made out prior to coming to your appointment.
