It is important that you maintain a nutritious diet during the weeks of healing. The patient who maintains a good diet of soft foods generally feels better, has less discomfort, and heals faster. Foods containing tomatoes, onions, peppers, of spices of any kind will be irritating and should be avoided for the first two weeks.
Apple juice, milk, carnation instant breakfast, ovaltine, tea, or coffee. Stewed fruits, prunes or similar fruits should be mashed or sieved. Cooked cereals such as oatmeal or cream of wheat. Eggs: soft boiled, scrambled, poached, or soft fried. Toast should be softened with gravy or jellies. Liquid supplements such as Boost or Ensure.
Home cooked or canned broths or soups, Ground beef, baked of broiled fish (or fried with the crust removed), broiled or stewed chicken, pasta, eggs, (as above) baked or mashed potatoes, asparagus, peas carrots, lima beans or string beans, (all cooked to tender) cottage cheese, canned fruits, baked apples, puddings, Jell-o, custards, pound cakes, cans of boost or ensure can be blended with vanilla ice cream to make a nutritious shake.
REMEMBER: I good rule to go by when selecting foods, is to pick foods with the consistency of a hard boiled egg. You may eat any soft foods that do not irritate. You may chew if it is not too uncomfortable to do so. If you experience difficulty in eating properly, use the dietary supplements (boost, ensure, etc.). It is very important to get enough proteins, vitamins and minerals to heal properly. Do not hesitate to call the office with any questions.
